Violent Dream

A solo exhibition by Mai Elshaer

This exhibition explores the experience of internal exile and psychological displacement within the

context of Gaza’s ongoing siege and humanitarian crisis. It confronts the paradox of being forcibly

uprooted while physically remaining in the same place — a condition of forced stillness that mimics

the trauma of illegal immigration, without movement.

Through four large-scale oil portraits (160 x 140 cm) and an installation, the exhibition reflects

on the personal and collective journey of survival under genocide, siege, and trauma. The works

draw from first-hand experience with the artist working with children in therapeutic spaces during

times of war and displacement, using art as a form of resistance, healing, and testimony.

At the heart of this exhibition is the question: Are we visible? Each piece functions as both a

mirror and a voice.

Violent Dream centres the body, memory, and emotional residue of displacement. The installation

component complements the portraits by materializing the tension between rootedness and exile.

Rather than presenting displacement as a distant tragedy, the exhibition insists on its immediacy,

and layered emotional impact. It invites the audience not to observe from afar, but to step into a

space shaped by loss, endurance, and the longing to be seen.
